Facilitators

Certified facilitators are available across our service area in north central Indiana to educate and guide individuals and families in developing advance care plans, completing advance directives, and designating a healthcare representative.

Interested in becoming a facilitator?

There are a few key qualities you’ll need. First, strong communication skills are essential—both in speaking and listening. It’s important to have a genuine passion for the work and a real interest in helping others. You should also be able to set aside your own personal values and not impose them on those you’re facilitating. Being open to learning is crucial, especially when it comes to understanding the requirements of statutory documents. Good listening and inquiry skills are a must, as is the ability to show empathy and compassion in your work. Finally, you’ll need to be able to provide data about facilitated conversations to the program manager.

We utilize the Respecting Choices® First Steps® ACP Facilitator Certification, a program designed for professionals—such as social workers, nurses, clergy, physicians and others—who assist patients and residents in making end-of-life care decisions. We also encourage community members who are interested in supporting healthy adults in discussing and documenting their future healthcare choices to pursue facilitator certification. The program includes an online curriculum to be completed prior to a 1-day First Steps® ACPFacilitator Certification class. To be certified, participants must demonstrate competency in facilitating ACP conversations through role-playing activities. See our Events Calendar for upcoming training sessions.
